The high school basketball tournament is back in Bangor.

The event is being held inside the Cross Insurance Center, for the first time this year.

To mark the occasion, arena staff joined city council chair Ben Sprague in recognizing the first fans.

A father and son from MDI were surprised to receive gift cards, concession items, and a commemorative basketball.

“We want to offer you this basketball, as first fans, give it to you there,” said the city’s mayor, handing the items over to the father and son.

“Well, they didn’t really tell me I had a surprise. She said, can you wait right there real quick and someone came and got me,” said Geoff Hanscom, a high school student.

“He thought he might have been in trouble,” said his father, Bill.

The first game began at 5 pm Friday

Class B’s MDI Trojans faced the Old Town Coyotes in the inaugural game.
