A man from Industry serving 70 years in prison for beating a woman to death more than three decades ago is appealing his conviction.

Lawyers for 58-year-old Jay Mercier went before the Maine Supreme Judical Court Wednesday.

Mercier raped 20-year-old Rita Saint Peter before attacking her with a tire iron and running over her with a truck in North Anson in 1980.

His lawyers argue the court violated Mercier’s right to confront some of the witnesses in his trial.

They also said some statements Mercier made to investigators should have been dismissed, as well as some of the results of the search of his truck.
