Attorney General Discloses Drug Death Statistics

There were 163 drug induced deaths in Maine in 2012. That’s according to Attorney General Janet Mills and the the Chief Medical Examiner.

They say they number of these types of deaths has been consistently high over the past 12 years and most are accidental overdoses.

The AG says there has been a large increase in deaths due to heroin use. Almost 30 people died from a heroin overdose in 2012, compared to 7 the year before.

She says while they’re still compiling research, the numbers of heroin deaths in 2013 will likely keep rising.

They also say 6 of the state’s 25 homicides during 2012 were drug related and 927 babies born in the state last year began their lives under the influence of drugs.
