The University of Maine hopes a new building on campus will become a hub for creativity and innovation.
The Innovative Media Research and Commercialization Center, or IMRC, officially opened Thursday with a dedication ceremony.
The 15-hundred square foot space is the new home for the university’s art and new media departments.
The 9.3 dollar million renovation project includes 3D printers, design labs, audio and video editing suites, a sound stage, and more.
Educators hope community members and small businesses collaborate with students to develop prototypes for products.
“We can do pretty much anything from idea to creative evolution to generation to production,” said Jeff Hecker, Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs.
“Teaching, research, and service, and engagement with Maine all have happens at the same time,” said Owen Smith, director of the intermedia masters of fine arts program.
Small business leaders had the chance to exchange ideas tonight too.
The mid-coast company Juice Conference organized a networking event as part of the dedication.
