“Cause I knew I was failing,” said Chris Dow.

Long-time Newport Selectman, Chris Dow is battling Multiple Sclerosis.

“It’s been a struggle to see him you know cause he’s been such a hard worker and a caretaker,” explained wife, Donna Dow.

In the past few years the damage to his brain has increased, and doctors advised he go to The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore to talk with experts.

“The doctor feels that I should be seen and they want to see me hopefully there’s something they can do for me,” Chris said.

Chris and his wife Donna are active volunteers and have served their community for years.

“To be where I am now I’m on the other side of the fence per say now,” he said.

The trip alone could cost upwards of five thousand dollars, and the couple has waited a year to get one appointment. Family-friend, Sharon Shaughnessy decided she had to do something.

“Every little bit even the smallest things have been a great big help,” Shaughnessy said.

She’s organizing a benefit dinner, and has put together an online donation page. She’s optimistic the trip will give the couple some much needed answers.

“That’s our biggest hope is that it’ll be positive and that something can be done to help them out,” Shaughnessy said.

“He’s just been such a great man and to see him like this it really breaks my heart,” Donna said.

The dinner is this Saturday, December 28th at the Palmyra Community Center.

It goes from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

$10/Person and $30/Family of four

There will also be entertainment, dessert and a silent auction.
