From the WABI-TV5 & CW Forecast Center:
Arctic high pressure currently centered north of the Great Lakes will control the weather across Maine tonight and Christmas. The combination of the high to our west and a storm near Newfoundland will bring New England a gusty northwest breeze tonight and much of Christmas day. Temps tonight will fall to between -7 and +7, but the gusty wind will drive the wind chill values to between -10 and -25. Your Christmas day skies will average out partly to mostly sunny, but temps will only reach the single numbers north to teens south and once again a gusty breeze will drive the wind chill values below zero.
As the high slips off to our east Thursday a storm will slide across southern Ontario and Quebec. A period of light snow or snow showers will likely develop across much of Maine later Thursday as the storms trailing cold front slides east through New England. A small storm may develop along the front as it slips east into the Gulf of Maine later in the day and that would cause snow to briefly become a bit steadier. The most likely shot of seeing the steadier snow later Thursday will be over eastern parts of the state. Temps ahead of the cold front will climb into the 20s to low 30s from north to south across the Pine Tree State. At this point in time it appears anywhere from a coating to as much as 4” will accumulate Thursday and Thursday evening.
Colder air will return to Maine along with partial sunshine Friday. Saturday will be fair and seasonably cold as high pressure slips east towards the Mid-Atlantic Coastline. A southwest breeze will bring slightly milder weather to our region Sunday before a cold front turns the wind back into the northwest early Monday which will draw a fresh batch of arctic air down into Maine for the last couple of days of 2013.
