AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Thousands of Mainers who thought their health coverage was being canceled under the federal health care overhaul will have the chance to stay on those plans another year.
Maine’s Bureau of Insurance said Tuesday that it will allow Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield to renew plans for one year that don’t meet the more extensive requirements for essential benefits under the health care law.
An Anthem spokesman says the company is pleased with the decision and will reach out to policyholders in the coming days about the changes.
Facing political pressure, President Barack Obama said earlier this month that insurers could temporarily extend plans facing cancellation.
About 8,500 Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield of Maine policyholders have been told that their current plans are being canceled and replaced.
