An area in Bangor known mostly as a place for homeless people to camp out was cleaned up Friday.

More than 70 volunteers came out to the “Pines,” a wooded area off I-95, Hammond Street and Texas Avenue.

The United Way of Eastern Maine organized the effort as part of an event called a Day of Caring.

Volunteers are helping out at eight locations in the area, doing everything from painting to yard work to clearing away debris.

They hope the work at the “Pines” will give the place new life.

Sarita Field, with the United Way of Eastern Maine, says, “This land is literally right next to a preschool and the University of Maine Augusta at Bangor. So we want to make this land usable. We could put in, eventually, trails, have families out here.”

Saturday volunteers will be painting at the Hilltop School in Bangor.
