KINGFIELD, Maine (AP) — The mother of a 16-year-old Canadian boy arrested in Maine after a high-speed police pursuit says her son suffers from mental health issues.
The boy’s mother tells the Morning Sentinel, from her Ontario home that her son has talked of suicide. She says he’s been living with his father, but would rather be in jail.
The boy’s name has been made public but The Associated Press is not identifying him because he is a juvenile.
Authorities say the boy and a 13-year-old girl are runaways who stole three vehicles and led law enforcement officers on a high-speed chase in which two U.S. Border Patrol vehicles were damaged and shots were fired before they were apprehended in Kingfield Monday.
The girl remains in the hospital, although she has not been charged.
