Hampden Agrees on Grant to Hire School Resource Officer

Hampden town councilors have agreed to accept a federal grant to help the police department hire a second school resource officer.

The  $125,ooo grant will be used to cover about half of the cost of the position for three years.

Town manager Susan Lessard says by voting 4-2 last week to accept the grant, town councilors agree to pay for the position entirely on its own for a fourth year.

Right now Hampden has one resource officer who’s based out of Hampden Academy, but is available to all of the schools in the district.

The second officer would be stationed at Reeds Brook Middle School.

Lessard says the position will probably be filled early next year.
