LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — The fifth Dempsey Challenge is wrapping up with cycling events in and around Maine’s second-largest city.
More than 1,100 cyclists were taking part in Sunday’s fundraising bicycle rides ranging from 10 to 100 miles and capped with an appearance by Patrick Dempsey during the event’s closing ceremonies.
Dempsey, who plays the character Dr. McDreamy on TV’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” launched the Dempsey Challenge following the experience of his 77-year-old mother’s battles with ovarian cancer.
Dempsey was born in Lewiston and raised nearby. Last year’s event raised $1.2 million for the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
