Furloughed federal workers can get fresh food at a discount.
From now, until the government shutdown ends, the Brewer based non-profit Food and Medicine is extending its 50% discount program at farmers’ markets.
The program, normally offered to those qualifying for snap benefits, cuts half the cost of the first $40 spent.
Farmers’ market volunteers tell us that providing a healthy alternative to cheap processed food is soup for the soul.
Adam Harr, a farmers’ market volunteer with Americorps Vista said, “And this little girl was holding his cookie and put the cookie down and kept begging her father to eat my tomatoes instead.”
The Brewer Farmers’ Market is open again Saturday from 8:30 am to 1 pm at the Brewer Auditorium on Wilson Street.
The Bangor Farmers’ Market is open on Sunday from 11 am to 2 pm across from the Bangor Public Library.
Bangor’s Ohio Street Farmers’ Market is open Wednesdays 2 pm – 6 pm at the Bangor Garage, across from the Rock Church.
