AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine Gov. Paul LePage says the entire staff of the Disability Determination office in Winthrop has been furlough due to the federal government shutdown.
LePage says the 52 state employees are paid 100 percent by federal funds.
In addition, two employees in the Office of Aging and Disability Services and one each in the offices of multicultural affairs and family independence were furloughed.
Employees were notified Monday that the furloughs were effective immediately.
LePage says the state has no recourse but to suspend operation of the Social Security disability determinations division due to the shutdown.
The Winthrop office is closed until further notice.
