Westbrook Man Arrested In Quarry Dispute

WESTBROOK, Maine (AP) — A Westbrook man who for years has opposed blasting at a quarry near his family farm was arrested last weekend after refusing to leave property as he was trying to observe rock blasting.

Warren Knight was arrested Saturday on a charge of criminal trespassing on Central Maine Power Co. property where he said he was trying to observe Pike Industries blasting.

The 53-year-old Knight says he’s trying to protect and preserve the nearby 500-acre Smiling Hill Farm, which has been in his family for 300 years.

The dispute is at the center of a court case that prevented Pike from blasting last year. Knight says he wanted to see and feel what the blasts were like.

Pike officials say they are in full compliance with legal obligations to neighbors.
