A Houlton man charged with two counts of murder is in jail without bail.
Matthew Davis, 32, was in court via video conference on Wednesday afternoon.
He’s accused of killing Michael Kitchen, 51, and Heidi Pratt, 49. The bodies of the victims were found Monday morning in a burning house.
According to a police affidavit, Davis left his house Sunday night in a “black wrecker style flatbed truck” and went to Katahdin Forest Products. While at Katahdin Forest Products Davis reportedly drove the truck into a building and left it there.
Police say Davis then took a white Ford Ranger belonging to Katahdin Forest Products and drove to 331 Oakfield Smyra Road, where Kitchen and Pratt lived. Police say Davis killed the man and woman and then set fire to the home and pickup truck.
The medical examiner says Kitchen died from multiple gunshot wounds. Autopsy results on Pratt have not yet been released.
Police say after killing the couple and setting the fires, Davis took a truck parked the in garage of the victims home and drove to Island Falls where he set fire to the truck.
Davis reportedly got into a kayak, crossed the lake, and stole a car from a camp on Beaver Dam Road in Island Falls. Police found Davis around 10:45am Monday on Beaver Dam Road in Island Falls. During a search of the Beaver Dam Road area police say they found a wallet with a picture of Michael Kitchen inside of it.
Police say they found two firearms during the investigation. One firearm was found in the home where the bodies were found, and the other was found in one of the burned trucks. Police say both firearms belonged to Matthew Davis.
At this point, police do not know if there is a connection between Davis and the victims.
Davis is scheduled to be back in court in February.
