Jenny Dwyer’s business, Mutt Nose Best, has taken off over the last couple years.

Her all-natural pet-cleaning products are sold all over the country.

Now, she’s giving back in a way that’s very close to her heart.

“Last November, there was a tragedy that hit very close to me,” said Dwyer.

Dwyer’s friend, Danielle Reed, was killed by her husband in Alton. Dwyer says she was also in an abusive relationship with him before he married Dani.

“My thoughts started spiraling. I was trying to think why I stayed for as long as I did in that situation and quite frankly, why she went back,” said Dwyer.

Dwyer says one reason she stayed in the abusive relationship was because she didn’t have a place to stay with her dogs.

She says Dani also had pets.

“A lot of times, when you’re in that relationship, your animals are the close thing to you. You’ve kind of been isolated from your friends, your family, so those animals mean even more to you,” said Dwyer.

She says currently, there are no domestic violence shelters in Maine that are equipped to take in animals.

Dwyer has started Paw It Forward. It’s a foundation she hopes will one day help every shelter in Maine become pet-friendly.

Their first event to raise money for the cause is B.A.R.K.K. which stands for Because Acts of Random Kindness Kount. It’s a 5-K Run, Walk, and Woof to end domestic violence.

“Hopefully, you know, we can make something good come out of this tragic situation. If we can help just one family get out in time, or the out you know before something horrible happens, that will be worth it,” said Dwyer.

It’s especially worth it for people like Leslie Leathers.

She survived her abusive relationship.

“My dog, Rocky, was with me throughout the whole situation. He was the only unconditional love I had. This event Saturday is so important. To support something like this, after all I’ve been through… I couldn’t think of a better way to give back,” said Leathers.

Everyone, and every dog, is invited.

Registration is Saturday, September 28th at 8:30am.

Runners take off at 9:30, walkers five minutes later.

You can pre-register at the Sports Arena Friday night from 5:30 to 7:30.
