Maine Coalition Opposes Bear Baiting Referendum

Updated 1 year ago

A group of outdoors organizations have formed a coalition to oppose a proposed referendum that would ban bear hunting in Maine using bait, dogs or traps.

The Maine Wildlife Conservation Council is made up of organizations that include the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine, the Maine Professional Guides Association and the Maine Trappers Association.

The coalition is holding a news conference Monday that will be attended by Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Commissioner Chandler Woodcock.

Mainers for Fair Bear Hunting announced this summer that it plans to gather signatures of Maine voters to qualify for the November 2014 ballot. Mainers rejected a similar referendum in 2004.

Mainers for Fair Bear Hunting includes the Humane Society of the United States and the Wildlife Alliance of Maine.
