Since the 1970′s, a local charity has worked to end domestic abuse in the area.

Spruce Run celebrated their 40th Anniversary with an event at Hollywood Casino in Bangor.

Some of the non-profit’s founding members spoke about how much the group and the country have changed over the years.

It began in 1973 as a support group for women going through divorce.

It has since expanded to offer emergency shelter, education groups, transitional housing, children’s services, prevention programs, advocacy, legal assistance, and more.

Perhaps most importantly, they say, is their effort to save lives by changing attitudes.

October is domestic violence awareness month.
