Maine Community Colleges Get $13 Million Grant

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) – Maine’s community colleges are getting more than $13 million in grants to offer more information technology training opportunities.

In announcing the federal Department of Labor grants, Maine’s congressional delegation said the funding will go to a consortium made up of Maine’s seven community colleges in partnership with employers, workforce development agencies, industry associations and other educational institutions.

The funding supports a statewide initiative called “Maine is IT!,” which aims to train more than 2,000 unemployed and under-employed Mainers in information technology across the state and across a range of industries.

The delegation says the grants will help Maine residents as well as businesses that are looking for employees who are trained in information technology.

In all, the project will create or expand 36 one-year certificates or two-year associate degree programs.
