Shipyard Workers Saddened By Washington Shootings

Updated 11 months ago

Workers at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard say they were stricken with sadness following the deadly shootings at the Washington Navy Yard.

John Joyal of Somersworth, N.H., has been working at the Maine shipyard for 37 years. He said that as a person who works for national security on a daily basis, he never imagined that someone would attack one of the shipyards.

Shipyard commander Capt. William Greene, who was once stationed at the Navy Yard, said it was heartbreaking.

No personnel at the shipyard were affected by the shooting. Officials at Bath Iron Works in Bath said that three employees assigned near the Navy Yard have been accounted for and are safe.

New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan is touring the shipyard Tuesday, a visit that was scheduled before the shootings.
