Maine Lawmakers Not Ready to Endorse Syria Strike

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) – Maine’s congressional delegation remains undecided about military strikes against Syria, and none of the four lawmakers is eager to get involved in another conflict in the Middle East. Members of Congress will return this week to Washington, where the Senate is expected to take up President Barack Obama’s proposal for a limited military strike to punish Syrian President Bashar Assad for using chemical weapons against his own people. Maine’s delegation says calls from constituents are heavily against military strikes. Rep. Chellie Pingree says she’s leaning against authorizing a strike, while Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King and Rep. Mike Michaud declared themselves to be undecided. Collins said she fears the military could be drawn into “a quagmire.”
