Bar Harbor Cruise to Help Raise Money for Ovarian Cancer Patient’s Campaign

A woman in Bar Harbor wants to fill a cruise boat this weekend, in the fight against cancer. She’s hoping to fuel a goal started by a recovering cancer patient who’s very close to her.Just days after Nancy Corliss’s granddaughter was born, her daughter-in-law, Trish faced devastating news. “Lo and behold she had a 5-pound-21 centimeter tumor in her, in her ovary. And she spent the whole year going through cancer with a newborn baby.”Trish, who lives in Indiana, now wants to help others like her by raising $100,000 in two years for the Stand Up to Cancer organization. Her mother-in-law wanted to find a way to help meet that goal, too. That’s when Gary Fagan with Acadian Nature Cruises in Bar Harbor stepped in.Corliss says, “Gary walks into my office and we get talking and he says fill a boat. Fill my boat with people and I’ll give you all of the proceeds. I’m not usually one who can’t come up with words, but I did that day.”Fagan says, “It affects everybody. Some where, some how, some way. I’ve lost a couple of people in the last year or so to it. That’s what made it all seem like a good idea.”Corliss says she’s been amazed by the support for the charity cruise.”I just think the whole idea that she’s trying to do something for someone else and not for herself is what’s important.”Corliss hopes to contribute a few thousand dollars to Trish’s campaign and, just like her daughter-in-law, doesn’t plan to stop there. “If you can dream it, you can do it. Walt Disney said I could and I can, stand up to cancer.”The Fill A Boat Charity Cruise is Sunday, September 8th, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. It’s on board the Acadian in Bar Harbor. Tickets are a suggested donation of $25. To reserve a spot, contact Nancy Corliss at 266-0275.And if you’d to learn more about Trish Corliss’s journey, you can check out her blog
