Mt. Hope Cemetery in Bangor is open for walking tours. The cemetery is the oldest garden cemetery in the country, and it has graves dating back to before the early 1800’s. The tour features tales of some of the area’s most famous people shared by a costumed guide.”It goes through mostly the corporate grounds, which is where the older and the more novel gravestones are located. We tell stories about the people who are represented there, about the meaning of the sculpture, and the different symbols that are used on the gravestones and the history of the cemetery itself,” says museum curator, Dana Lippitt. The next Mt. Hope Cemetery walking tour is Friday, September 6th at 5:00pm. Tickets are $10 for adults, and $5 for kids ages 6-12 years old. The tour begins at the cemetery superintendent’s office. The Bangor Museum and History Center will be starting a new twilight tour of the cemetery in October.
