WABI-TV, WPXT-TV/WPME-TV and the Maine Principals’ Association have entered into a new agreement that provides for live coverage of the high school football state championships in all four of the newly established classes, beginning this November and continuing through 2016. “We already had a continuing agreement in place for this year,” said Mike Young, WABI-TV’s General Manager, “but it only covered the previously existing three classes, with all games played on Saturday in Portland. We and WPXT were interested in carrying all four games. The MPA wanted this coverage, as well. So we put together a new deal that covers all of the games.” In Southern Maine, Friday night’s game will air on WPXT’s sister station, WPME. Saturday’s games will all be aired on WPXT. Combined with the station’s previously announced regular season schedule, WABI will produce and air ten high school football games this season. “It does take a lot of work to plan, produce and air broadcasts of this nature, but it’s worth it,” said WABI-TV Program Director Steve Hiltz. “It’s a tradition for us, in large part because we really love creating local programming. It’s a part of our heritage. It’s gratifying that our viewers and sponsors continue to support and appreciate our efforts after all these years.” WABI’s high school football schedule “kicks off” on Saturday, September 21, at 1:00pm, as the Bangor Rams host the Deering Rams. This year’s state championships are scheduled on Friday, November 22, at 7:00pm, and on Saturday, November 23, at 11:00am, 2:30pm and 6:00pm.
