Chief Lucas Discusses Disaster Preparedness
Bangor city councilors talked about how to respond to railway accidents, as crews cleared the scene of a train derailment in Hermon. In light of last month’s deadly train derailment in Quebec, councilor Charlie Longo asked Chief Scott Lucas of the Bangor Fire Department to discuss emergency response plans with the Government Operations Committee. Lucas told the crew that through his crew’s training and regional resources, they are prepared to respond to a situation on the scale of the tragedy in Lac Megantic. He says, part of their preparation is learning from various situations like Monday’s in Hermon. “We do a critique of every incident that we have. And also, when it’s a regional type of incident. Through MEMA and Penobscot County Emergency Management, we will get details on the response,” said Lucas. During that meeting Lucas also discussed the department’s pending application for a federal grant that would help the department hire additional firefighters. A number are eligible to retire in the coming year.
