Graduation Requirements Increase for Incoming Brewer High School Students
Starting with this year’s freshmen class, students at Brewer High School will have to earn more credits to graduate. The school committee voted to raise the requirements from 20.5 credits to 24 credits. Principal David Wall says it goes along with the block system schedule, which allows students to earn up to 32 credits by the end of their senior year. Wall says math, science and social studies requirements also increased for the incoming class.”Going to the 24 credits it increase your academic rigor, increases, obviously, your academic standards, but it’s also going to help our students, I believe, getting prepared for college. And, of course, their performance on standardized testing. So i think there’s a benefit all the way around on this.”Wall says if a student fails a class, a study hall can also be turned into a “credit recovery” class to help meet the graduation requirements.
