Fairfield Gardener Gives Back To Neighbors; Hopes Food Pantries Will Do The Same
A Fairfield man is using who uses his garden to help his neighbors would like to see food pantries encourage needy Mainers to do the same.John Holt has been gardening all his life. What he and his dog buddy don’t eat he gives away to those around him.Holt tells us he’d like to see food pantries giving out seedlings to families in need to encourage them to garden. He thinks people will get more bang for their buck.”Because I think people are overwhelmed when they think of a garden,” Holt said. “Because they think, oh I don’t have a tiller and I don’t have that much room. Heck if you got a flower garden stick a couple of seedlings in the corner here and there. All you need is a couple tomatoes to feed your whole family. And some cucumbers and some peppers. Throw in some croutons and you got a salad.”Holt grows everything from tomatoes and cucumbers to cayenne and jalapeno peppers. He says the secret is to water your garden everyday it doesn’t rain.
