EMCC Student Wins Mitchell Scholarship to Study in Ireland
A local community college student will soon be studying in Ireland, thanks to a scholarship in honor of one of Maine’s most famous native sons. Kori Kinney is one of two students to receive a George J. Mitchell Peace Scholarship. She just earned an associate degree from Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor. As part of the scholarship program, Kinney will spend a semester at Cork Institute of Technology in Ireland. She’ll study business management and hopes it will help her follow her passion of taking care of horses.”I figured being able to study in Ireland and really experience the culture and live there and have everything provided for me and have my way completely paid would be an amazing experience, first of all. And it also ties in with my career goal of having a business, like running my own stable. Ireland is kind of world renowned for equestrians and equine athletes they produce.”Kinney leaves for Ireland next month. She plans to come back and pursue a bachelor’s degree in business administration. The scholarship is a tribute to Mitchell’s work in bringing about the 1998 peace accord in Ireland and Northern Ireland.
