Two Hancock County Men Found Guilty on Criminal Charges of Illegal Elver Fishing
Two men from Hancock County have been found guilty of illegally fishing for elvers. They’re considered to be the first in the state to face a trial since fishing for elvers without a license became a criminal offense in April. A judge convicted 41-year-old Ralph Fowler, Junior, and 49-year-old Gregory Trundy of Hancock Tuesday of trying to catch the baby glass eels in the Goose River in Belfast. They were fined $4,250 each, on three charges. Fowler and Trundy argued they were fishing for smelt.Marine Patrol spotted them just a few hours after the new law went into effect.
