Friends of Fort Knox Vote “No” on Fences
The “Friends of Fort Knox” took an extra step in their attempt to block a proposal to build safety fences along the historic site. Tuesday night the group dedicated to preserving the nearly 170 year old stone structure unanimously voted “no” on a Memorandum of Agreement. The fence is being proposed by the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands, along with the Army Corps of Engineers. This comes one week after meeting with planners to discuss the project that would line the area with fencing, hundreds of feet long, as well as plants. The idea behind it was to protect visitors from falling. The Army Corps of Engineers estimates the project cost $500,000.The Maine Department of Conservation has final say on anything that would be installed.
