Two women are dead after their car went into the water in Roque Bluffs.37-year old Amy Stiner of Machias, and 38-year old Melissa Moyer of Pennsylvania first became lost Tuesday near the Roque Bluffs State Park hiking trails, according to Washington County Sheriff Donnie Smith. Stiner was 5 months pregnant.A nearby landowner, Wayne Hansom, whose also a member of Sunrise Search and Rescue, was contacted by the Maine Warden Service. He volunteered to look for the women. He found them as well as their dog.They were given rides back to their vehicle, which was in the State Park.A short time later, one of the women called 911, saying they had driven their vehicle into the water. GPS coordinates from the phone showed they were almost a mile away from the park, according to authorities.The Maine Warden Service was called out, but could not find the women or their car.More help was called in including local fire departments, the Machias Police Department, Maine Marine Patrol and U.S. Coast Guard.The vehicle was found underwater about 175 feet from the Pond Cove boat ramp. Both women and the dog were inside. The incident is being investigated as a fatal motor vehicle accident, according to Sheriff Smith.
