For more than thirty years, Carl Norris has been fixing cars in the Newport area. His close friend, Don Hazelton, says what makes Carl different from your everyday mechanic is how he takes care of others.”He is always doing something for somebody. He’s done a lot of things for me, he’s done a lot of things for dozens of other people,” said Hazelton. When Aberdeen Chimney Company in Bangor was looking for people to nominate hometown heroes for a giveaway, Hazelton decided to enter Norris and his wife, Sara, for an all expenses paid trip to Bar Harbor.”We’re here to give the certificate and surprise them, they don’t know that they’ve won,” said manager, Ken Crump.During the surprise, Crump said, “You do so much for the community here in Newport. You’ve been really good to everybody in this community, and this is our way of saying that, you know, you deserve a day off in Bar Harbor.”It will be a day off Carl and his wife both deserve, especially after battling medical complications, including a kidney transplant.”He’d take her up and down that highway to Massachusetts without any complaint, no hesitations, come back, work on these cars here,” said Crump.”He never asks anything in return, and what he basically says is, what are neighbors for,” said Hazelton.”I don’t think I deserve it. I don’t know why they’ve done it, things do happen I guess,” said Norris.
