Trial Continues for Former Selectwoman Charged with Extortion
The trial continues in Bangor for a former Chelsea selectwoman charged with extortion, tax evasion, and fraud. Carole Swan is accused of extorting about $20,000 from a contractor while she served as a selectwoman and inflating the cost of road projects awarded to her husband’s construction business. Her husband, Marshall, is also charged. His trial will be separate. A former town manager has testified about how the bidding process worked and a former selectman admitted he had heard Marshall Swan was abusing Carole, but never investigated it. Carole Swan’s lawyer claims Swan is a woman who only followed the orders of an abusive husband. The trial is expected to last at least three weeks.
