Maine fire crews are assisting with an explosion in eastern Quebec after a train carrying crude oil derailed, sparking several explosions and forcing the evacuation of up to 1,000 people. A large swath of the town of Lac-Megantic was destroyed Saturday. Several people were reported missing but Quebec provincial police Lt. Michel Brunet said it was too early to say if there are any casualties. The town is about 155 miles east of Montreal and 135 miles north of the Maine border. The train, reportedly heading toward Maine, belongs to Montreal Maine & Atlantic. According to the railroad’s website, the company owns more than 500 miles of track serving Maine, Vermont, Quebec and New Brunswick.
