Fatal Crash in Thorndike

At least one person is dead after a car crash in Thorndike Thursday night.The 9-1-1 call from Unity Road came in just before 7:30 p.m.Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office describes it as a “violent, violent crash.”He says the vehicle was wrapped around a utility pole, snapping it.When Chief Deputy Trafton arrived on scene, the transformer was on fire. He says it exploded at least three times while he was there.One passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.It took fire fighters about two hours to get the driver out. He was alert and talking to rescue crews at the time.Chief Deputy Trafton says he’s humbled and amazed at how hard the volunteer fire fighters from Thorndike, Unity and Troy worked despite the heat and humidity. One of the fire fighters did have to be treated at the scene for heat exhaustion.Both the driver and another female passenger were taken by medical helicopter to the hospital. No word on their conditions.The names of the victims have not yet been released.
