A karate instructor from Augusta who admitted to sexually abusing two boys – including a student – is going to prison for 40 years. Parents of the victims told a federal judge that 35-year-old Wade Hoover took their childrens’ innocence and betrayed their trust. Hoover was sentenced in federal court in Bangor Tuesday. He previously pleaded guilty to producing and possessing child pornography. Hoover owned a martial arts academy in Lewiston.Police found photos and videos of Hoover abusing the boys, who appeared to be sleeping but, the judge said today, they were actually drugged. They also discovered hundreds of images of child porn on his computer. In court today, the mother of one of the boys said as a karate instructor, Hoover taught the boys “how to protect themselves from people in the world. But he was the most evil man they’d ever encounter in their lives. And they needed to protect themselves from him.”U.S. District Judge John Woodcock told Hoover, “You have not merely violated the law. You have violated our most basic moral codes of society. You preyed upon young boys when they were vulnerable.””Hoover, an Air Force veteran, cried in court as he apologized, saying words can’t really show how sorry he is. The judge also order him to be under supervised release for the rest of his life once he’s out of prison.Hoover is facing state charges of sexually abusing the boys, too, to which he’s pleaded not guilty. The District Attorney in Kennebec and Somerset Counties says the parents of the victims still want to pursue those cases.
