Equality Maine Reacts to Supreme Court Rulings

It’s a historic day for same-sex marriage supporters around the country. The Supreme Court ruled the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional, a provision which denied federal benefits to married gay couples.Even though same-sex marriage is legal in Maine, local supporters said on Wednesday that it’s a victory for the entire nation. The ruling happens to coincide with the annual Bangor Pride Festival.People filled Nocturnem in Downtown Bangor Wednesday evening to celebrate and remember their struggles for equal rights. The Executive Director of Equality Maine, Betsy Smith, said, “It’s a very exciting, great, and historic day in the state of Maine for all the married couples and all the same-sex couples to be married in the future.”The supreme court also made a ruling in regards to Proposition 8 in California. The decision leaves in place a trial court’s declaration that California’s voter-approved ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional. This means that officials in the state will be able to preform same-sex weddings by the end of Summer.
