Local farmers markets are hoping for a successful summer. The Brewer based non-profit, Food AND Medicine presented “Community Supported Farmers Markets” with nearly $30,000 Tuesday in Bangor. The donation will let anyone shopping with EBT Cards or SNAP benefits to get 50% off their purchase. Farmers are excited to provide quality, healthy and local foods to more people. “We have seen the market grow almost double the traffic as it was last year and every week it seems to be about a third of the traffic is using this program, and I think that’s really exciting compared to other markets, that we do that, that don’t have that, its a huge benefit,” says Clayton Carter, Farmer and Chairman of the Bangor Farmers Market Association. Two markets in Bangor and one in Brewer will receive the money.
