A special 4th of July parade in Bangor promises celebrate the nation’s birthday and support cancer patients. The third annual Boat Parade on the Penobscot River is a fundraiser for the Lafayette Family Cancer Center in Brewer. It’s being organized in conjunction with a concert on the Bangor Waterfront called “Chords for a Cure”.More than two dozen boats took part in last year’s parade. Organizer Carl Ross says boaters are also encouraged to dress up their vessels as part of a decoration contest hosted by Hamlin’s Marina in Hampden.”We’d love to have 30, 40, 50 boats, so we’re encouraging not only the people we boat with on the river and Penobscot Bay but people who have trailer boats and would like to come decorate your boat in the 4th of July theme and also for one sort of cancer awareness or another. There are several types of cancer flags.”It’s a $100 donation to enter a boat in the parade. It starts at Hamlin’s at 9 a.m. on the 4th and the parade will arrive at the Bangor Waterfront around noon. For more information, log on to www.mainefuelpolish.com/Boat_Parade\.
