Just because school is out, doesn’t mean kids should go with meals this summer. Starting this Monday, and everyday all summer long, a healthy and FREE lucnh will be provided at the Bangor YMCA to kids age 18 and under. This is all thanks to a partnership between the YMCA and the Good Shepherd Food-Bank. “Over 80,000 kids in Maine now are participating in the free and reduced lunch program so when summer time comes all that goes away, so now if you’ve got a family with two school aged children, they now have to come up with over 200 meals on their own, which is a real challenge when they’re already trying to make ends meet,” Melissa Huston of the Good Shepherd Food-Bank said.”By partnering with the Good Shepherd Food Bank providing these meals, we are giving kids an opportunity to come in, have some positive interactions and we’ve been hoping to make some impacts on their lives,” Kristen Burwood, Assistant Childcare Director at the Y said. The free meals will be provided Monday – Friday, 11:00am – 1:00pm. The YMCA still needs volunteers. To volunteer, contact Kristen, 941-2808 / kburwood@bangory.org
