Governor LePage vetoed two bills on Monday, including one that would have expanded medicaid coverage to nearly 70,000 Mainers. In a letter to legislators, the governor said the state’s expansion of welfare in the early 2000’s lead to massive hospital debt and Mainers leaving the insurance market for what he calls “free healthcare”.Governor LePage said, “Maine must negotiate with Washington to ensure that our citizens and taxpayers are protected. We need flexibility in our program to improve delivery and root our fraud and abuse.”LePage also vetoed a study in gender discrimination in health insurance policy rates.
