Gov. Paul LePage has proclaimed next Saturday as Destroyer Escort Day in Maine. The June 15 proclamation honors American sailors from World War II and the Vietnam and Korean wars who served on destroyer escort ships. The ships were used as lifelines for Allied forces by protecting convoys from submarines in the Atlantic Ocean. LePage met last Wednesday with the New England Chapter of the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association, which has included Navy veterans from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts. The governor presented them with a signed copy of the 2013 Destroyer Escort Day Proclamation.
