East Millinocket Native Wins Powerball’s Largest Jackpot

A former Maine woman who raised four children in East Millinocket before moving to Florida is the sole winner of the largest Powerball jackpot in history.Neighbors say Gloria MacKenzie spent winters in Florida with her husband, a retired mill worker, before moving there permanently. Her husband, Ralph, passed away several years ago.MacKenzie claimed the prize on Wednesday in Florida, taking a single lump sum payment of more than $370 million.MacKenzie was described by a family friend as a stay-at-home mom. Andrew Hopkins, a neighbor across the street in East Millinocket, said her husband enjoyed fishing, hunting and snowmobiling in Maine. He died in 2005.The winning ticket was bought at a supermarket in Zephyrhills, Fla., on May 18.
