Report: Maine Deaths Outnumber Births in 2012

Updated 2 years ago

A new analysis by the state economist says Maine had 103 more deaths than births in 2012. The analysis of U.S. Census data shows that Maine’s birth rate of 14.1 per 1,000 women in 1990 slipped to 10.2 in 2010. The study also sheds light on Mainers’ ages. It says Maine is tied with Vermont for the smallest percentage of residents under 18 years old, 20.7 percent. It says Maine has the nation’s highest percentage of baby boomers at 29.4 percent, and the oldest median age, 43. The Governor’s Office of Policy and Management, through the state economist, analyzes census data. More detail is available on OPM’s website, www.maine.gov/opm .
