Responders from 5 towns were called to a house fire in Newport, Monday afternoon. They arrived on scene just before 3 P.M. The windows had to be smashed at the home on Water Street. Fire fighters believe it started near a window on the first floor. Fire Departments from Pittsfield, Detroit, Etna, and Corinna were called in as mutual aid and had the fire out within minutes. Nobody was home at the time but the family’s pets had to be rescued. The house is on the same street as the Newport Fire Department. Responders say that the quick response prevented the situation from becoming much worse. No word yet on what sparked that fire. The Fire Marshal’s Office has been called in to investigate.
