Coast Guard Finds Man Who Made MDI Distress Call Safe with Group of School Canoers

The Coast Guard ended its search for a missing boater today after discovering the man who made a distress call west of Mount Desert Island last night was safe on Long Island with a group of school canoers. The leader of the group says he called the Coast Guard after being disoriented in the fog and didn’t hear officials responding to him.The man made the call and gave his location in Blue Hill Bay about 8 o’clock last night, but didn’t name his boat or say why he was calling. A rescue effort was launched immediately out of Southwest Harbor.This morning the Coast Guard found a group of 25 school members and their canoes.The group leader says they made it to Long Island shortly after the call.They camped there for the night, just as they had planned.
