Students Shed Light on Social Issues for Final Project

With graduation just around the corner, students are hard at work on final projects and some are getting the community involved.Students of the Graduate School of Social Work at UMaine held a forum Saturday to shed light on social issues. The topics of discussion were economic justice and healthcare, two issues that the students feel affect everyone.Guest panelists included Senators Geoffrey Gratwick and Emily Cain. The students say its their job to support their community.Student in the Social Work program Jeanette Rogers said, “People are really struggling right now with this economy. Some people are losing healthcare. As social workers it’s really our duty to advocate on behalf of those people who are struggling because of these issues.”Even though it was meant to be a learning experience, students hope their fellow classmates will continue this event in the coming years.
