Schools A to F Grading System to be Unveiled

Maine’s new grading system of the state’s schools is being unveiled by Gov. Paul LePage and state Education Commissioner Stephen Bowen. The new system uses a familiar A-F scale to grade each school. The administration says Maine joins a dozen other states and New York City in utilizing a system that uses existing data and helps parents and community members with easy-to-understand information about their local schools. At Wednesday’s unveiling, Bowen explains how the report cards were developed and what his department will do to better support struggling schools. Teachers, students, parents and legislative leaders were expected to attend. Critics of the system say it’s punitive and arbitrary. Reports cards were sent to each Maine school Monday, and are being made available Wednesday afternoon.
