The Brewer School Department has a new leader. After considering 10 applicants, Jay McIntire of Tamworth New Hampshire was unanimously elected to the position by the school committee. He is currently employed as superintendent of schools with SAU 64 in Milton, New Hampshire. He will replace retiring superintendent Dr. Daniel Lee. McIntire is a graduate of Hampden Academy and earned his bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Maine. Administrators in Brewer admit the economic climate has been turbulent in the past year and with looming budget cuts, tough decisions will have to be made. The district could be eliminating up to 6 jobs. They’re also asking taxpayers for a $1.2 million increase in funding to fill a budget shortfall.Still, they believe McIntire is best suited for the position.”There is no one area that is bloated. We have lost 30 positions in the last 5 years. We have cut and cut and we are at the point now where there are no easy cuts and to my mind there are no cuts that are not going to impact our children,” said committee chair Janet McIntosh. The school board’s search committee has known of Mr. Mcintire’s appointment for days now but lingering contract negotiations prevented them from making an announcement earlier. The name was so closely guarded: one committee member noted that he hadn’t even shared that information with his wife.
