Lawmakers are considering a proposal that would allow Maine Forest Rangers to carry guns. Currently, rangers can only carry mace. Those in favor of the measure say it’s ridiculous to have law enforcement officers who often serve as first responders, to be unarmed. “I’ve been on working with the Forest Rangers since day one,” said Winslow Democrat and co-sponsor Catherine Nadeau. “It’s been an education, and yes we believe that the people out there doing their best in the field for us would be armed. They’re going in with flashlights and a can of mace and that’s just not acceptable.”Nadeau says rangers could carry guns for a brief time in the late-1990s.But lawmakers took away that right more than a decade ago.
